Classification of country codes (SSB-3)

The standard classification was adopted in SSB in 1974/1975, replacing simplier code lists. Since 1975, names have been changed, new codes have been added and some have been discarded. The standard was used both in population registration and in the population statistics. The Office of the National Registrar was separated from SSB in 1991, but continued to use and maintain the code set from the SSB period. In the middle of the 1990s, a principle was introduced not to include country elements that did not exist in the ISO standard. Such codes have, however, continued to exist in SSB.
