The Norwegian general map series at scale 1:5 000 - 1: 10 000 cover some more than 50 per cent of the land area. Areas covered by this map system are classified with focus on suitability for cultivating crops and natural plant production capacity, intended for agricultural or forestry use. The areas are classified according to area status and not actual use. The classification comprises criteria regarding soil parameters, topography, production capacity of forestland, forest tree species, natural vegetation etc. Outfield areas area assessed regarding capacity for forest production and suitability for land reclamation.
